Meeting a City glimpses behind the superficially familiar facade of Salzburg to consider psychological and geographical distance. This sound piece is constructed from language taken from the local newspapers and recordings taken from ten coffee houses in Salzburg, the acknowledged meeting place of the artist's native Austria and local newspapers and recordings taken from ten pubs in Sheffield. Two small speakers sit on the coffee table top opposite each other, one transmitting the Salzburg sound compostion and the other one the Sheffield sound composition.

Meeting A City , close up |
Meeting a City was part of the exchange project Distance organised between Gallery 5020, Salzburg (Austria) and a group of Sheffield based artists. Sheffield which aimed to create a setting for artists to develop and realise their work in relation to a city unknown to them. Distance is an exploration of how the city of Salzburg might be reflected upon by artists who inhabit the city of Sheffield (UK). It addressed ideas of perception and perspective, suggesting the relationship between literal points in the material world, or, between conceptual, psychological, ideological or social ways of ihnabiting and perceiving the world.
