MAMA

After becoming a mother four years ago, I developed an interest in how motherhood is perceived in our society. Amongst other findings I was amazed to discover over 30,000 books on motherhood, their titles demonstrating the complexity and life changing consequences of the subject.

The mundane and repetitive process of sewing 1300 of these book titles onto the fabric, perhaps reflects one of the more difficult aspects of motherhood during the first year. White birthing balls, with their egg or sperm like association and their unstable form are for me a further representation of motherhood.

To be able to read the titles, one has to be inside the 3,5 meter high and 1,7 diameter cylinders. From the outside the back of the writing is visible and so more dificult to decipher the text. This way of presenting the piece reflects for me that only one who is experiencing motherhood has a true picture of what it entails.
